Alicia Marshall heads out for a Papa Pal appointment.
"Papa gives us an opportunity to make connections and improve the quality of life for another person," Alicia says. "Helping a Pal is also a unique opportunity to change our own life as well."
Making connections
Alicia's personal experience as a Papa Pal taught her valuable lessons.
Although she was initially uncertain about what her visits would entail — Papa Pals assist with various tasks like household chores, errands, pet care, car rides, and even tech support — she discovered that companionship was the most significant contribution she could offer.
"I found I enjoyed just reading the newspaper and discussing current events with my Papa member," she says. "Connection is a component that we all lost in some way during COVID. I am honored to bring that component back to life."
Moreover, Alicia realized that it wasn't just her Papa member who benefited from their time together. Through her interactions, she had the opportunity to learn about different life experiences, cultures, and family traditions.
"I did not know much about my grandmother's family, but my Papa member gave me a unique perspective. She was able to tell me about immigrating from Italy. It was really interesting."
Alicia simply logs onto the Papa Pal website to find jobs near her. She can work as a Papa Pal during the hours that she chooses.
Becoming a Papa Pal demands high levels of compassion, understanding, and adaptability, as Alicia discovered. "I think being a parent lends itself to working as a Papa Pal because we need that same skill set," she explains.
